Werken in Zuid-Afrika part 1

Het is ondertussen een week sinds ik lande op Johannesburg airport. Na een vlieg trip van 12 uur begon het werk in zuid-afrika.. Donderdagnacht vlieg ik weer terug, en als ik terug ben komen er nog wel wat niet-technische foto’s. Maar voor nu moeten jullie het hier mee doen:

Reparatie SooS kassa

Zo, dat was me een lang avondje.
Na het afsluiten van de SooS op INHolland Alkmaar besloten Leone en Bart nog ff schoon te maken, terwijl ik maar even ging epibreren op de bank.
De lekkere house muziek maakte het een fijn momentje.. Alles werd goed schoongemaakt, en ook de kassa (met touchscreen) kreeg een extra-speciale schoonmaak beurt.
Vloer gedweild? Check.. Keukentje schoon? Check.. Bar schoon? Check..
Kassa geteld? Check.. Kassa-lade terug in kassa? “Ay, nog niet, ga ik ff doen,.. hé wacht.. De kassa reageert niet meer 
“..
“mwaaahh, even stroom eraf en opnieuw proberen”..
“nee, hij werkt nog steeds niet“..
“wtf!?”
Het was donderdag avond, half 8, en het touchscreen van de kassa werkte niet meer. Wat de kassa compleet onbruikbaar maakte. De aan en uit knop deed het nog, opstarten werkte ook prima, maar alle invoer op het scherm werd genegeerd.. En ook na een aantal keer loskoppelen en opnieuw proberen bleef het touchscreen dienst weigeren.
Dus besloten Leone en ik de kassa te gaan fixen. En wat begon met het losdraaien van de eerste schroef, eindigde 4:30 uur later met een nog steeds niet werkende kassa.. of toch wel?

We hebben de hele kassa uit elkaar gehaald en alle onderdelen schoon gemaakt. Uiteraard hebben we alle kabeltjes gelabeld zodat we precies wisten welk kabeltje op welke aansluiting moest. (handig, die medische tape ^^)
Op het scherm ontdekten we een aantal scheurtjes, maar na wat technisch onderzoek besloten we dat dat het probleem ook niet kon zijn.

Verder kwamen we onderweg een los kabeltje tegen, maar het kan goed zijn dat we die zelf per ongeluk los hebben getrokken.

Toen hebben we de kassa weer in elkaar gezet en aangesloten… gespannen wachten we af tot ie opgestart was, en wat we te zien kregen was een melding dat het geheugen gereset was… Slecht nieuws, want dat zou betekenen dat we al onze producten weer opnieuw in de kassa zouden moeten zetten. Komt natuurlijk omdat we de accu hebben losgehaald, maargoed, dat is even niet anders. De grote vraag is: doet het touch screen het weer?
Helaas, het touchscreen blijft nog steeds dienst weigeren.. Lekker, daar ben je dan bijna 5 uur mee bezig.
Teleurgesteld besluiten we om maar richting de stad te gaan.., biertje kan geen kwaad… Of een malibu-cola in mijn geval.
Leone loopt alvast de gang op, en in een laatste poging tot een werkende kassa probeer ik nog één keer iets in te tikken.. En dat werkt gewoon!
Dus ik roep Leone terug, en op een super droge toon vraag ik ‘m om wat in te tikken… Leone, nog steeds teleurgesteld, drukt op een paar cijfers op het scherm, en als die gewoon in beeld komen kan hij het eerst even niet geloven… Tot het enigszins doordringt: “Wat een klote kassa!! hij werkt gewoon!! haha!”.
Het is onnodig te zeggen dat we behoorlijk blij waren, bijna 5 uur werk werd eindelijk beloond. Helaas is de kassa dus wel “leeg”. Alle gegevens zijn kwijt.. Maar dat valt op te lossen..

Congierge Hans en het gesloten hek

Het is maandag 15 juni 5:30 en de “Introductie Commissie” van Studentenvereniging Omnivas heeft een vergadering. De vergadering vind plaats in het Omnivas-hok op hogeschool INHolland.
Ergens in het begin van de avond besluiten we een pauze te nemen, als ik buiten kom tref ik de auto van Hans (een gele Smart) aan op een vreemde manier. Hans is congierge op hogeschool INHolland en zijn auto is zojuist expres ingeparkeerd. Nou gebeurd dat wel vaker door Omnivassers, maar dit keer is het perfect uitgevoerd, zodat hij echt nergens weg kan; niet over de stoep en niet over de drempel. De daders: Sander, Lennard en Jarno. En nou is het wachten tot Hans dr achter komt.
No way dat die smart nog weg komt. (opklik voor groot)
Terwijl we al weer even verder vergaderen komt Hans, filmend met zijn telefoon, het Omnivas-hok binnenlopen. (continue reading…)

According to the Youtube description: the (wierd) clip is fan-made and contains scene’s from the movie Octane (which I’ve not seen). There does not seem to be an official clip for this track.
First day at work

I got a job recently; Java-developer at a mobile applications/communications company. I’m probably going to work together with another Java-dev to create a large web-application.
So, I’m now installing my development computer which contains a AMD Athlon 2800+, and a Ati Radeon 9800 graphics card. Not very high-end, but I assume Linux will perform quite good on the system. I chose the Kubuntu 10.04 distribution, since I run that at home too off-course. The initial setup went quite good, no errors at all. Installing the Ati drivers gave some problems so I skipped that for now, which means I’ll have to do with just one screen (instead of both of the two screens). But installing additional packages works great as always. So I got myself some Yakuake epicness and off-course Firefox and all other default programs one needs for Java-development. Well, everything seems to be up and running now! Lets get to work 
Installing Ubuntu/Kubuntu with dmraid

When Kubuntu 10.04 launched I decided to upgrade my PC from 9.10 to the new version. However, after finishing upgrading the PC wouldn’t boot anymore. Off-course, I could’ve figured out what was wrong and fixed the problem, but I decided to completely reinstall my PC, since I had been upgrading Kubuntu ever since 8.10 it was kinda old.
After I created backups of all my data – over 900 Gigs in music, movies and project files – I removed my partitions and created a “fake” Raid disk using my motherboards on-board S-ATA controller, which allows fake-raid setups. I created a RAID-10 setup using four 500 Gig Western Digital HDD’s. When all that was done it was time for the Kubuntu alternate installer CD to show it’s quality’s, which turned out to be quite a bit of a problem. The installer does support fake raid (thought not officially), it didn’t recognize my RAID-10 setup and thus it didn’t found any disk’s to install Kubuntu on. So I figured I had to install Kubuntu manually.
In this post I will describe what I did in a tutorial-like way so it can be used by others having the same problem I had.

Most of the time when I’m working with my PC, I have VLC playing an internet radio. However, I always had to go to the website to click the stream, or start the player and fill in the url manually. That bored me, so I created this little bash script a few weeks ago. It takes one parameter which refers to a online stream, and then starts VLC media player using the right URL. I’m using the script on a daily basis and it suites quite well…

Started a blog

Hi there,
After thinking about it a lot, I finally started a blog. I have a lot of ideas I would like to share and that is why I started this blog at first. But now I’m online and running I think I might have a lot more to share then I initially thought. Offcourse there’s still a lot to do. The first thing I need to do is come up with a good name for this blog. Second thing to do is getting a nice theme. I think I’ll just use a existing template but modify the color’s and visual stuff.
When all of that is done.. I’ll be back….
