Ay, nog niet, ga ik ff doen,.. hé wacht.. De kassa reageert niet meer

Het was donderdag avond, half 8, en het touchscreen van de kassa werkte niet meer. Wat de kassa compleet onbruikbaar maakte. De aan en uit knop deed het nog, opstarten werkte ook prima, maar alle invoer op het scherm werd genegeerd.. En ook na een aantal keer loskoppelen en opnieuw proberen bleef het touchscreen dienst weigeren.

Dus besloten Leone en ik de kassa te gaan fixen. En wat begon met het losdraaien van de eerste schroef, eindigde 4:30 uur later met een nog steeds niet werkende kassa.. of toch wel?

We hebben de hele kassa uit elkaar gehaald en alle onderdelen schoon gemaakt. Uiteraard hebben we alle kabeltjes gelabeld zodat we precies wisten welk kabeltje op welke aansluiting moest. (handig, die medische tape ^^)

Op het scherm ontdekten we een aantal scheurtjes, maar na wat technisch onderzoek besloten we dat dat het probleem ook niet kon zijn.

Toen hebben we de kassa weer in elkaar gezet en aangesloten… gespannen wachten we af tot ie opgestart was, en wat we te zien kregen was een melding dat het geheugen gereset was… Slecht nieuws, want dat zou betekenen dat we al onze producten weer opnieuw in de kassa zouden moeten zetten. Komt natuurlijk omdat we de accu hebben losgehaald, maargoed, dat is even niet anders. De grote vraag is: doet het touch screen het weer?
Helaas, het touchscreen blijft nog steeds dienst weigeren.. Lekker, daar ben je dan bijna 5 uur mee bezig.
Teleurgesteld besluiten we om maar richting de stad te gaan.., biertje kan geen kwaad… Of een malibu-cola in mijn geval.
Leone loopt alvast de gang op, en in een laatste poging tot een werkende kassa probeer ik nog één keer iets in te tikken.. En dat werkt gewoon!
Dus ik roep Leone terug, en op een super droge toon vraag ik ‘m om wat in te tikken… Leone, nog steeds teleurgesteld, drukt op een paar cijfers op het scherm, en als die gewoon in beeld komen kan hij het eerst even niet geloven… Tot het enigszins doordringt: “Wat een klote kassa!! hij werkt gewoon!! haha!”.
Het is onnodig te zeggen dat we behoorlijk blij waren, bijna 5 uur werk werd eindelijk beloond. Helaas is de kassa dus wel “leeg”. Alle gegevens zijn kwijt.. Maar dat valt op te lossen..

~~Geert-Johan, Donderdag-nacht, na een paar uurtjes stad. 03:36.

Het is maandag 15 juni 5:30 en de “Introductie Commissie” van Studentenvereniging Omnivas heeft een vergadering. De vergadering vind plaats in het Omnivas-hok op hogeschool INHolland.

Ergens in het begin van de avond besluiten we een pauze te nemen, als ik buiten kom tref ik de auto van Hans (een gele Smart) aan op een vreemde manier. Hans is congierge op hogeschool INHolland en zijn auto is zojuist expres ingeparkeerd. Nou gebeurd dat wel vaker door Omnivassers, maar dit keer is het perfect uitgevoerd, zodat hij echt nergens weg kan; niet over de stoep en niet over de drempel. De daders: Sander, Lennard en Jarno. En nou is het wachten tot Hans dr achter komt.

No way dat die smart nog weg komt. (opklik voor groot)

Terwijl we al weer even verder vergaderen komt Hans, filmend met zijn telefoon, het Omnivas-hok binnenlopen. Hij kan dr wel om laggen, dus worden wat foto’s van gemaakt. ‘Roep maar als je weg wilt, dan verplaatsen we de auto’s naar buiten‘ zegt Jarno. Maar Hans vind dat niet nodig: ‘nou nee…‘ zegt hij wat bedenkelijk, ‘Ik krijg een lift van iemand dus ik hoef niet weg met mijn auto.‘

Even later begint het alarm te piepen, wat betekend dat Hans het alarm op het gebouw zet. Als het alarm er is op gezet (en het Omnivas-gedeelte weer vrij) begint Hans naar het hek van de parkeerplaats te lopen. Ik roep tegen degenen met een auto dat ze vlug weg moeten voor Hans het hek dicht doet. Dus Jarno, Lennard en Sander springen in hun auto’s. Maar Hans is ze al te snel af, hij trekt een sprintje en duwt het hek dicht. Alleen Sander kan op een paar centimeter na nog net tussen het hek doorrijden. Jarno en Lennard hebben pech, en komen met piepende banden tot stilstand aan de verkeerde kant van het gesloten hek. Hans draait het hek op slot en kijkt wat trots. Op dat moment kon je mij werkelijk opvegen, het was gewoon te mooi, Hans heeft ze opgesloten.

‘Volgens mij is er een omweg. Als je om het gebouw heen rijd kan je over een dun voetpad en wat bosjes ook van het terrein af.‘ zeg ik. Maar Hans weet meer: ‘Daar zijn net camera’s opgehangen. Als je daar langs rijd loop je het risico gefilmd te worden, en daar word je niet blij van‘.  Lennard vind het maar vervelend: ‘Komop Hans, maak het hek gewoon weer ff open. Dit is wel heel flauw‘.  ‘Nee hoor,‘ zegt Hans ‘jullie hebben tijd genoeg gehad om jullie grap mij in te parkeren weer goed te maken‘.  ‘Maar ze hebben nog gevraagd of je weg wilde, dan is dit toch oneerlijk..‘ probeer ik uit te leggen. Maar Hans is overtuigd van zijn zaak: ‘Dat zeg je alleen maar omdat je hoopt dat ik het hek dan weer openmaak‘. Jarno vind het maar raar: ‘Komop zeg, het grapje is nou wel leuk geweest, we moeten echt naar huis…‘ En ik vraag nog: ‘komop, hoeveel tijd kost het nou dat hek open te maken?‘ Lennard begint zelfs boos te worden, ‘Hoe komt ik nou thuis!? Ik moet toch naar huis? Dat kan zo nooit!!’ Maar volgens Hans is de oplossing simpel: ‘Of je gaat via die omweg met de kans gepakt te worden.. en als je dat niet wilt bel je gewoon je ouders, of je gaat hier ergens slapen in een studentenhuis..’

Lennard snapt het niet meer en Hans maakt nog wat foto’s met z’n mobiel.

Hans gaat weg. We kijken hem verbaasd achterna als hij in de richting van Bergen loopt, waar hij word opgepikt. ‘Ah toe nou Hans!‘ roep ik hem nog achterna, maar Hans loopt stug door… ‘Als het een beetje een vent is loopt hij op het eerstvolgende bruggetje gewoon weer terug.‘ stelt Jarno. Maar Hans loopt echt weg. Hij kijkt niet meer op of om, en heeft al die tijd doodserieus gereageerd. Jarno en Lennard hebben gewoon een probleem.

Weer aangekomen in het Omnivas-hok krijgt ook Janneke het hele verhaal te horen. Er word nog gegrapt dat het wel prachtig zou zijn als Hans toch op een afstsandje staat te kijken, maar ook die humor is snel verdwenen en Lennard begint toch flink pissig te worden. We bespreken wat slechte theorieën om toch van het terein af te komen maar besluiten uiteindelijk de smart van Hans in duizend stukjes uit elkaar te halen en te verkopen op marktplaats.nl.
Janneke en ik zijn het met elkaar eens dat dit niet de Hans is die we kennen. Op deze manier gaat de grap wel heel ver, en dat kan nooit waar zijn. Dan bedenk ik me ineens een stukje van eerder die avond, op het moment dat Hans zei dat hij een lift kreeg.. ‘Het klopt niet, toen hij zei dat hij een lift kreeg.. die zin ging veel te langzaam, alsof hij dat op dat moment aan het verzinnen was.‘ Zeg ik, en ik begin te sprinten over het parkeerterein in de richting van Bergen (richting de internet-lounge, voor de kenners). ‘Hij sprint me er nooit uit! wedde dat ie hier is!? haha ik krijg em wel!‘ roep ik nog terwijl ik aan het rennen ben. Als ik eenmaal bij de internet-lounge ben komt Hans om de hoek gelopen met een big-big smile op zn gezicht. Hij heeft ons allemaal genept, en goed ook! Aangekomen bij het Omnivas-hok kan iedereen er wel om laggen. Lennard komt met een plens water in zn gezicht de wc’s uitlopen en is best opgelucht dat ie nu toch naar huis kan. Had je bijna op de bank geslapen, hea Len!

Wist je dat:

• Hans nog 200 meter door heeft gelopen voor het geval we terug zouden komen om te kijken of hij echt weg ging?
• Sander de brandweer wilde bellen om het hek open te trekken?
• Evelien het hele plannetje van Hans al van te voren wist?
• Het idee de Smart van hans in 1000 stukjes op marktplaats.nl te verkopen gelukkig geen serieus idee was? … toch..??
• Hans geniaal is!?
• Lennard net op tijd op de rem ging voor het hek?
• Geert-Johan even echt niet snapte wat er met de “echte” Hans was gebeurd.
• We Hans nog wel terug pakken..!!?

Here is what I did:
First, boot the Kubuntu live CD.

Then make sure dmraid and gparted are installed.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install dmraid gparted
I use gparted to partitionize the raid-set because I find gparted a handy tool to create partition tables.
However, gparted does not understand how to format a raid partition, so that should be done manually.

dmraid manages the raid partition’s. and make’s sure Linux can find them.
Therefore, dmraid creates block-devices in the /dev/mapper folder.
This is done by activating any raid-devices dmraid can find:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -ay

The folder /dev/mapper should now contain some block-devices. Check by doing:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ls -l /dev/mapper
This will return a list with at least two items:
total 0
crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 59 May 5 14:55 control
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 252, 2 May 5 14:55 nvidia_djecffij

In my case the raid set is called nvidia_djecffij, this can be different on another PC. The first half depends on the manufacturer of you’re fake-raid chip. The second half is randomly generated and is very likely to be different on any other PC.

Now start gparted and give it the drive as parameter, else it wont find the raid set.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ kdesudo gparted /dev/mapper/nvidia_djecffij

Then create a partition table (Device > Create Partition Table), use the default partition table type (MSDOS).
Now divide the available space to some partitions. I used just one main partition (Ext4) for the root(/) and a swap partition(~11Gig).
However, when it comes to formatting gparted will very likely fail. So just make sure it created the partitions and gave them a number (eg: nvidia_djecffij1, nvidia_djecffij2).
Afterwards run dmraid again to activate the newly created partitions.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -ay
When thats done we can format the partitions manually using mkfs.ext4 and mkswap:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/nvidia_djecffij1
and
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkswap /dev/mapper/nvidia_djecffij2
Both programs will give some information but as long as no error’s show up it will be fine.

Now we need a directory to mount the main partition so we can start installing.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkdir /target
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount /dev/mapper/nvidia_djecffij1 /target

Let’s create some default folders inside /target
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cd /target
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mkdir boot dev cdrom proc sys

Now mount the devices, cdrom, proc and sysfs:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount --bind /dev /target/dev
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount --bind /cdrom /target/cdrom
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -t proc proc /target/proc
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -t sysfs sysfs /target/sys

Next install the debootstrap program into the live workspace:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install debootstrap

Install the base system and copy required configuration files:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo debootstrap lucid /target
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /target/etc/apt
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /target/etc
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo cp /etc/hosts /target/etc/hosts
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo cp /etc/network/interfaces /target/etc/network

Now we have basic requirements in place we can chroot to the /target directory:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo chroot /target

Then we have to install the language pack and use it, we don’t need sudo now because we are root:
root@ubuntu:/# apt-cdrom -m add
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get update
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install language-pack-en
root@ubuntu:/# export LANG=sv_SE.UTF-8

Exit, remount and chroot again:
root@ubuntu:/$ exit
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -t proc proc /target/proc
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo mount -t sysfs sysfs /target/sys
root@ubuntu:/# sudo chroot /target

Because our new system must be able to understand the raid devices we must also install dmraid:
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install dmraid

Now we have to install grub and the linux kernel:
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install grub
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install linux-generic

And in the end we’ll have to install just a whole bunch of packages which basically make ubuntu/kubuntu what it is.
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install ubuntu-standard
root@ubuntu:/# killall acpid
root@ubuntu:/# kubuntu-desktop
You can replace kubuntu-desktop by ubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop, edubuntu-desktop, or any other variant of ubuntu.

When all this is done we must create and set up a user to login with:
ubuntu@ubuntu~$ useradd geertjohan # your name instead of geertjohan
root@ubuntu:/# passwd geertjohan
root@ubuntu:/# mkdir /home/geertjohan
root@ubuntu:/# chown geertjohan /home/geertjohan

Duplicate the root line except with your username instead of the word root to give your new user access to sudo:
root@ubuntu:/# visudo

Now add the created user to some groups:
root@ubuntu:/# usermod -a -G adm,dialout,cdrom,floppy,audio,dip,plugdev,scanner,admin geertjohan

And add the admin group to the sudoers file by adding %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL at the bottom
root@ubuntu:/# visudo

The base installation is now done, the next thing we’re going to do is setup the boot-loader.
For the boot-loader I use grub, first we have to move some files to the right location:
root@ubuntu:/# mkdir /boot/grub
root@ubuntu:/# cp /usr/lib/grub/-pc/stage1 /boot/grub/
root@ubuntu:/# cp /usr/lib/grub/-pc/stage2 /boot/grub/
root@ubuntu:/# cp /usr/lib/grub/-pc/* /boot/grub
In my case I used a 64 bit installation CD, so my cpu-arch is: x86_64, which makes the folder name: /usr/lib/grub/x86_64-pc

Now grub is installed it must be configured and loaded into the master boot record(MBR):
root@ubuntu:/# grub
grub> device (hd0) /dev/mapper/nvidia_djecffij

Make sure that when you use the root command in grub shell, the second number (the one behind the comma) must be the same as the number of your partition, minus 1. Since grub starts counting at 0. So for instance: nvidia_djecffij1 becomes (hd0,0) and nvidia_djecffij7 beccomes (hd0,6).
grub> root (hd0,0)

Now setup the grub boot-loader and update it to the master boot record:
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
root@ubuntu:/# update-grub

The last thing we must do to make grub work is edit the menu.lst file which is located in the /boot/grub directory.
All device references must be replaced with the raid device, in my case /dev/mapper/nvidia_djeccffij1.
Also the root reference (eg. (hd0,0)) must be right. By default (hd0,0) is used in the menu.lst so I don’t have to change anything, but in case you use (hd0,2) or some other number, make sure to replace all references with the correct one.
When this is done the boot-loader is ready to rock.

The last thing we have to do to get the system running is make sure that dmraid is used properly upon boot.
Therefore we must update initrd with some scripts.

And add the following (copy/paste):

Save and close again (ctrl+O, [enter], ctrl+X).
Next make sure the files are executeable:
root@ubuntu:/# chmod +x /etc/mkinitramfs/hooks/dmraid
root@ubuntu:/# chmod +x /etc/mkinitramfs/scripts/local-top/dmraid

When that is done we must rebuild the initrd file located in the /boot directory.
Replace 2.6.32-22-generic with the kernel version you are using. Perform a ls /boot to find out what version you are using.
root@ubuntu:/# rm /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-22-generic
root@ubuntu:/# update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.32-22-generic

When all this is done we can add some programs that are missing in the default installation and are normally installed by the installer:
root@ubuntu:/# apt-get install console-data
And we can setup the hostname (computer name):
root@ubuntu:/# echo MyComputerHostname > /etc/hostname

Troubleshooting:
If you ever get dropped in a “(initramfs)” shell during boot, this might be caused by unactivated raid partitions.
Try activating the raid partitions manually and then continue booting:
(initramfs) dmraid -ay
(initramfs) exit
Afterwards you should be able to find out what went wrong, maybe the dmraid scripts in the /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top and /etc/initramfs-tools/hooks got removed?
You might try replacing these according to how I did it above.

After thinking about it a lot, I finally started a blog. I have a lot of ideas I would like to share and that is why I started this blog at first. But now I’m online and running I think I might have a lot more to share then I initially thought. Offcourse there’s still a lot to do. The first thing I need to do is come up with a good name for this blog. Second thing to do is getting a nice theme. I think I’ll just use a existing template but modify the color’s and visual stuff.

When all of that is done..   I’ll be back….
